Steps you need to take to create quality roofing

When you set out to install quality roofing, the devil is in the detail. The large focus is the type of materials you’re using. However, each type of material requires different techniques. The details like fasteners, drainage, existing roofing and other components need to be in concert with the kind of roofing that you plan to utilize.

These techniques vary when you use asphalt shingles, cedar shingles and shakes, ballast roofing, clay or concrete tiles.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most widely used shingles, but other types of roofing are gaining popularity. To install quality roofing using asphalt roofing you need to following guidelines:

  • Remove all existing roofing and the underlayment.
  • Check the roof decking to make sure the lumber and the spaces in between don’t exceed the desired length. If it does, you may need to replace the decking.
  • The roof’s slope needs to meet certain measurements and depending on what those measurements are, you will use one ply or two ply underlayment.
  • Flashing needs to be entwined with shingles.
  • Use at least six fastener per shingles or what is suggested by the manufacturer.

Ballast Roofing

What are ballast roofs? They are roofing systems constructed by using gravel, pavers or vegetation to keep the roof components in place. Ballast roofing systems utilize a loose-laid construction method. That means that all the components, including the thermal barrier and insulation, are not attached to each other or the roof deck or the other layers by fasteners or adhesives. To construct a ballast roof with quality roofing, you need to do the following:

  • Existing roof covering that has two layers or more must be removed.
  • Ballast whether its plants, rocks or any other type of ballast is determined by the size of the new roof and structure.
  • Secondary drainage or scuppers need to be installed to prevent standing water.
  • Flashing needs to be installed around skylights, chimneys or any other roof component that is susceptible to leaks.

Cedar Shakes and Cedar Shingles

  • Solid decking is used when installing quality roofing for cedar shakes and shingles in windy or snowy climates.
  • The slope of the cedar shakes and cedar shingles must meet minimum measurements. Measurements will differ depending on whether you’re using shakes or singles.
  • Single ply underlayment and interlaytment are required.
  • Flashing needs to be interwoven with each set of shingles or shakes.
  • Fasteners are always placed according to manufacturer directions.

Clay or Concrete Tiles

  • To install quality roofing you need to check whether the roof deck can support the weight of the concrete tiles.
  • Utilize an underlayment that is two ply.
  • Fasteners must be flush with the roofing material.
  • Replace all flashing that has been damaged or worn out.
  • Weather exposure must not exceed manufacturer’s guidelines.

When you are installing quality roofing, you need to adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines. You also need to understand the specific techniques that are called for in order to install the roof covering correctly.
